In the battle between the FBI and Apple, many have asked: why can’t the FBI just hack the phone? This question was raised at a House Judiciary Committee meeting with FBI Director James Comey. Congressman Darrell Issa asked Comey if the FBI had done everything they could to unlock the phone before seeking Apple’s help. Issa dove into technical questions about the phone’s operating system and different methods for copying the phone memory to test hacking methods on. When Comey couldn’t answer any of the questions Issa said “How can you come before this committee before a federal judge and demand that someone else invent something if you can’t answer the questions?” However, according to Mashable many of the ideas Issa suggested wouldn’t work because of the complicated encryption, which allegedly only Apple can break.
